Standards

The FPA exists to give clarity about the ethics and operating standards of those who belong to the FPA. By being a member of the FPA, you send a message to your peers, competitors, clients and your community that you are part of a strong profession, committed to the highest operating and ethical standards. And that you are fully accountable for your actions.

By adhering to the standards set by the FPA, you clearly differentiate yourself from other financial planners.

World-leading best practice

As a professional association, we ‘set the bar’ and define the standards we expect our members to work to. In 2009, the FPA became the first financial planning professional association in the world to launch a full suite of professional regulations, incorporating a:

  • set of ethical principles
  • complete set of practice standards
  • full range of professional conduct rules

Read the FPA Code of Professional Practice and Code of Ethics that our members adhere to.

What FPA professionalism means to you

Working with a financial planner who is a member of the FPA means you can be confident in the quality of advice you will receive. Through setting, maintaining and enforcing high standards, FPA financial planners are:

  • 11 times less likely to be banned from practice than non-members,
  • 36 times less likely to be banned from practice if they are Certified Financial Planner® professionals.

The FPA’s professional framework holds the highest standards for financial planning regulation around the world. The result of this is that during 2010, no members of the FPA were amongst those investigated or banned by ASIC.

Can you direct me to the full suite of standards as I can't find them?

Hi Neil

The Practice Standards are in the FPA Code of Professional Practice and Code of Ethics document on this page from page 8 onwards. We will soon release our updated Code to members which will include updated Practice Standards.
